Xiaomi Corporation is a Chinese electronics company founded by Lei Jun in 2010 and headquartered in Beijing. It makes all sorts of consumer electronics, a lot of which are centered around smartphones. At the beginning of 2017 Xiaomi released its first version of a Ukulele, the Populele S1 This was a Concert scale Ukulele with a special plastic fretboard that had LEDs under it, and a bluetooth connector so it could connect to a smartphone app which made the lights work and show the novice player where to put their fingers to play a song. (It also had a USB connector to charge the internal batteries). By the end of the year they had moved from the S1 to a U1 with a change of woods and a new design.

In April 2019 Xiaomi launched the Populele U2 range, Still concert scale but featuring a number of different designs and made from T700 composite carbon fiber and ASA resin. The designs include a kind of Pineapple in a number of colours and a traditional waisted model with a cat headstock and sound hole; all still with the LED backed plastic fretboard.
