In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.
From San Francisco, California, she attended Michael Chock's Ukulele building school in 2004 and started her own luthier venture after that. She makes mainly Sopranos and Concerts, but I have also seen a Tenor, and is very fond of inlay work, (and cats).
From Texas, Jenkins and Son is father Chris and son Jeremy I believe Jeremy is a full time luthier and Chris is only part time, working in an animal clinic as well. They make Guitars, Banjos, (but not Banjoleles), and Concert Ukuleles under the brand name Lame Horse Instruments and a picture of a (lame?) horse on the headstock. They also brand some of the Ukuleles Komona Wauna Leiya as well as Lame Horse? The Ukuleles usually have a picture of a provocatively clad cowgirl, (with the Lame Horse logo somewhere in the picture too), on the back and have yet another strap line of "the original cowboy uke" (there is a long story about this on the website). As a custom option you can have your own picture printed on the back or no picture
Based in Hauppauge, New York, he makes mainly Guitars, but does include a Tenor Ukulele in his catalogue of standard offerings. He is a graduate of the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery who went on to work as a chief luthier in a Guitar Repair Shop for 3 years before opening his own workshop up in 2006
