In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

Dan Ratliff

He made his first instrument in 1971 while at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. After this study he gave up for a while, doing other things including moving to Southern California. He started building Guitars again as a hobby and was asked to make a Ukulele for a friend. He liked it so much he's now building Ukuleles in Sunnyvale, California almost exclusively, and full-time. He makes standard sort of figure 8 Ukuleles in Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone and he makes the offset Ukulele as a Concert which he calls the Blue Uke, (even if its not Blue), or as a Tenor which he calls the Jazz Peanut. I have also seen both Pineapples and Long Neck Sopranos. He is also quite fond of pickguards and golpeadores for a Ukulele maker

Kevin Crossett - Kepasa

From Middlesex, Vermont, he started making Ukuleles in 2004 have spent more that 20 years as an instrument repairer. The Ukuleles he makes are available as Soprano, Concert and Tenor models, and pay homage to the Mainland Ukuleles of yesteryear. Kevin Is keen to point out he is not a Guitar maker who also does Ukuleles, he only makes Ukuleles, though in my opinion, some of his Sopranos do look like Braguinhas (the Portuguese Instrument the Ukulele was descended from)

Michael DaSilva - DaSilva Ukulele Co.

He has been producing Ukuleles for sale since 2004. He is based in Berkeley,California where in addition to having a workshop he puts on lots of playing classes and shows. He make Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritones and has been known to make replicas of early classic designs. He is very highly regarded as a maker in California by both customers and other luthiers
