In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

Daniel Hulbert

From Utah, he started to build instruments part time in 2009 as his main occupations is as an electrical engineer. He started out making Soprano instruments using 6 pole guitar pickups but has made some larger ones too and using rail pickups. He has made some unusual Ukuleles including a fan fretted Tenor where the bottom string has a scale length of 17in and the top is 18 and a double neck Mandolin Ukulele. As well as making the Ukuleles he also keeps set of plans to give to other who want to make something similar

Gary Zimnicki

From Detroit, Michigan, he has been making Guitars since the early 1990's. In addition to Guitars he makes Mandolins, Octave Guitars, a range of South American folk instruments and of course Ukuleles. On his website he shows Soprano, Concert and Tenor only but given the breadth of instruments he makes a Baritone would be no problem were he commissioned to make one; especially as he has made Tiples that are are Baritone scale, (he has also made a proper Tenor scale Tiple Ukulele). He puts a Z on his headstock as a headstock logo and likes to use reclaimed woods. Oddly though for someone famous for his archtop Guitars and Mandolins he does not appear to have made an archtop Ukulele?

Phillip Patton

He is different from most other luthiers in that he is a Blacksmith by trade and mostly makes knives and swords. He comes from Indiana and has been making Guitars as well the knives for a while now, along with a number of other folk instruments, Dulcimers, Psalteries and the like. In 2011 he added Ukuleles to the list of instruments and has made a few now. He has made more Baritones than any other size and he also makes solid electric ones.
