In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

Bob Rigaud - New Moon

Based in Greensboro, North Carolina he studied Luthiery at Roberto-Venn School in Phoenix. Having completed this in 1979 he started working as a instrument repairer In a local music shop. from this he moved on to building acoustic Guitars and started his own workshop, Rigaud Guitars. He added electric and resophonic guitars to the catalogue and in 2012 he started making Tenor Ukuleles, (I have never seen another scale by him), which he decided to brand New Moon. On the website it mentions model II and model III but there is no explanation of the difference.

James Curtis

From Port Townsend, Washington State, he started making instrument in 1996 and is largely self taught. He appears to primarily make Mandolins but he does Guitars and other fretted Chordophones including Ukuleles too. Though he no longer takes custom orders he doesn't has a set catalogue and makes what he feels like then puts it up for sale

Jonathan Mann - Manndolins

He is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and started making instruments in the late 1990's after a long spell as repair man for the local branch of Sam Ash. As the, (bad pun), name suggests he specialises in the Mandolin family and makes both electric and acoustic models but his catalogue also includes steel strung solid body and semi-acoustic Tenor and Baritone Ukuleles. Though he makes acoustic Mandolins he doesn't appear to make acoustic Ukuleles not Soprano or Concert ones, (though his 4 string Mandolins could probably be set up as such especially as he seems to use the same 3 basic body shapes for the Ukuleles and Mandolins - presumably the Ukulele neck is wider?) All his Ukuleles come with a truss rod and a radiused fretboard
