In being on the lookout for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.
Howard Replogle - Ebi
Based in Chehalis, Washington State, he is a carpenter by trade and calls himself "a lutherie hobbyist". He started making Ukuleles in 2012 with his first being a Kit Tenor but then he attended The American School of Lutherie and did some further study at O'Brien Guitars. He has made all scales of Ukulele including Uke Bass and re enforces his necks with a carbon fibre rod; heis now offering short luthiery courses to teach what he has learned, and apparently "Ebi" (èh-bee) is Japanese for 'shrimp.'
Based in Chappaqua, New York, he is a part time maker who has a full time job and only makes Ukuleles as a hobby. He makes mainly Tenors but I have seen other scales from Soprano to Baritone as well. I have also seen Lili'us and resonators Ukuleles from him and he tells me he has made a couple of Guitars in the past. He builds on commision and charges for all the materials cost but not his labour
