In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The Ukuleles and other instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.
From Tokoroa, New Zealand, (where Toadstool Guitars is also the name of his music shop), he makes Guitars, Tenor, (only? I've never seen another scale), Ukuleles and the Tahitian Banjo (or Ukulele whichever you prefer?). For the Tahitian Banjo he makes traditional and Guitar shaped examples. He puts GP on the headstocks as a logo
Based in southern NSW, Australia and founded in 1994 he is a maker of resonator instruments, mainly Guitars but also Tenor Guitars, Mandolins and Ukuleles. He does all of the wood and metal work himself, including making the cones, (and he does sell just cones). He also, as a special request, intricately engraves the metalwork, the level of engraving he does is indicated by by style and a number so style 3 or style 4. (I'm not sure if the number refers to the amount of engraving or a specific pattern? but style 1 is unengraved). With regard to Ukuleles he makes a single cone Concert and a single or tricone Tenor.
Matt Blacka - Makaio
Based in Sydney, Australia, he started making Ukuleles in 2006 originally as a one off gift for his wife but as he enjoyed the process he has continued on a part time basis making a few each year. He is self taught and he stopped manufacture in 2010 but apparently started again in 2014 though I haven't seen any Ukulele newer than 2010? What I have seen is mainly Tenors made of local Australian woods.
