Grant Wickland Tenor Banjolele Banjo Ukulele
Wickland Tenor Banjolele
In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

Grant Wickland

From Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, He specialises in Banjos and single cone resonator instruments but also makes Cigar Box and other "recycled" instruments too. He started making instrument around 2007 when he was 60 and is largely self taught. In his standard catalogue of instruments includes a Tenor scale Banjolele and he has also built a brass bodied Baritone resonator Ukulele as a custom request too. He calls his website if not his instruments Banjos on Salt Spring

Michael Dunn

From Vancouver, British Columbia and making Guitars since the 1970's he is most famous for his Selmer style "Gipsy" Guitars but over the years he has made a number of other chordophones including Harp Ukuleles and "Gipsy" Tenor Ukuleles

Yusuke Kawakami - High River

Originally from Japan where he learned the art of luthiery first from his father, Hideho Kawakami then he spent a year working at Larrivee Guitars in Canada in 1999. Returning from Canada in 2000 he started working for or with his father making Ukuleles under the branding Majesty. In 2002 he moved to Vancouver BC. and started his own company making Ukuleles and Guitars, this time called High River Guitars, (though he made at least one Ukulele in Canada he still branded Majesty). With Majesty he made Soprano, Concert and Tenor Ukuleles in a number of styles but the High River Ukuleles are all a small (41½ cm) Tenor scale with a body shape that is based on the Martin Dreadnought Guitar and come in mahogany, koa or spruce top, (mahogany or koa). Though he is based in Canada now, it seems most of his Ukulele output still goes to Japan.
