Dave Simmonds Soprano Ukulele
David Simmons Soprano
In being on the lookout for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

David Simmons

Based in Worthing, England he started making musical instruments in 1986 and in 1988 started a degree course at the London Guildhall University (he graduated in graduated in 1993 with a 1st class Honours degree in Music Technology). He specialized in renaissance and baroque instruments such as the Lute, Viola da gamba, Vihuela, baroque Cello and Oud, but he also makes modern chordophone too like electric and acoustic Guitars, Violins and Ukuleles. On top of the manufacture of new instruments he also does repairs and taught instrument making at West Dean College.

Mark Haley

He is a maker of solid and hollow body Concert scale electric Ukuleles based somewhere in southern England, (Hampshire or West Sussex). I don't have much information on him beyond what it says on his web page. I have read he makes Resonator Ukuleles too but I have not seen any

Sven Nyström - Argapa

Based in Stockholm, Sweden He started making Ukuleles as a hobby in 2008, first with a kit and then on to make his own. He is still only a part time luthier and he only really makes Ukuleles, (he did make a Guitalele that's as far on the Guitar range as he's gone) but he does sell the ones he has made. He makes mainly Soprano scale including a selection of Soprano single cone resonator Ukuleles and pineapples, but he does also make Concert and Tenor scale too; plus I have seen a Tenor Taropatch of his. Probably though, his most popular scale Ukuleles apart from Soprano is Mini (which he calls Piccolo) with hand carved "violin" friction pegs for tuners. Generally he uses local woods but he will use more exotice woods for a special custom order. He often puts the tuners on the headstock asymmetrically, and he always stamps "AGRAPA" and it production number on the top of the headstock
