In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

John Daniels

He is from South Wales and has been making Ukulele since before 2013. All I have seen from him so far though are Mini scale Ukuleles that he calles Pixie models. They are made in batches from recycled wood and feature a soundhole rosette of dots. I have read and seen that a flaw with his Ukuleles is that they come with very cheap friction tuners and no side markers on the fretboard, on the plus side though the neck is quite wide for a Mini making it easier to play

Michael J King

He is based in Cheltenham, England and has been making musical instruments professionally since 2002. Initially he studied Sculpture at University and then went on to do Cabinet making, picking up luthiery during this education. He makes all kinds of chordophone including things that most people have never heard of like Lyres, Welsh Crwths, odd Harps and Icelandic langspils for museums and re-enactors. He does do more common instruments too including Guitars, Mandolins and Soprano, Concert and Tenor Ukuleles but apparently no Banjos. He usually make the Ukuleles in batches on spec but will take commissions too. As well as making instruments he put plans on his website to help others make their own instruments.

Paul Aguilera

He ran a musical instrument shop called Aguilera Guitars in Brighton, England for 7 years before (apparently) moving to Argentina in 2013. While at his shop, in addition to retailing instruments he built and repaired chordophones including Ukuleles. I can find no evidence that he is continuing in the luthiery trade at his current location in Argentina but it is possible he still does, (and it is also possible he might update his website to reflect what he is currently doing?)
