Steve Helme Banjolele Banjo Ukulele
Steve Helme
In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

The George Formby Society has a requirement for membership that is members own and play a Banjolele. As the club has been in existence for some time, it has quite a few members and it has not always been easy for them to find a decent Banjolele to buy.  Over the years the GFS have persuaded quite a few luthiers to make Banjoleles for them and their prospective and current membership. This started with Jack Abbott the former owner of the Abbott Banjo Co. but has continued over the years with always at least one person making Banjoleles for them. On this page is, I believe current, luthiers who they still use to provide this service

Fred Stevenson

After retiring from his occupation of Template Maker, Fred was persuaded to start making Banjoleles (not sure if Phil Cartwright still works with the GFS). He specialises in replicas of the Ludwig Wendell Hall Ukulele Banjo and was still working in 2011

Phil Cartwright

He started making Banjo Ukuleles in the early 1990's. He took over for the GFS when John Claughton stopped. He made personalised models as well as the generally accepted Abbott copies and was still in production in 2011.

Steve Helme

Known more as a performer at the GFS, (there are lots of videos of his performances) he has made and sold Banjoleles at their gatherings too
