Hawaiian 21st c. small importers/distributors click for more

. .
There are a number of Hawaiian based importers and retailers who have a range of Ukuleles they import, usually from China, and then usually brand with some kind of Hawaii based motif for sale to tourists. Most of these are very poor quality and I have a page to talk about them! Some however are properly made instruments, available to tourists and locals alike from retailers who are willing to put their own branding on. These are usually better than the budget end, (though may include a budget end model), and some can be quite good quality

Hinano

This is a supplier of both Hawaiian and Tahitian Ukuleles based in Haleiwa, Hawaii. The firm was started by airline steward and Ukulele salesman Jay Behrens sometime before 1999 when the instruments he was supplying had issues with the attachment of the bridge. Apparently he started out making the instruments himself using what he describes as a "hybrid method", basically using a tailpiece and floating bridge, (the same as a Tahitian Ukulele, hence the hybrid label). he has gone on to produce a range of Tahitian Ukuleles and Hawaiian ,(apart from the bridge and tailpiece) Ukuleles using the branding Hinano, (at some stage in the past, according to the website, the branding was Ae'a and Maohi / Maoli). Currently the range consists of Soprano, Concert and Tenor scale Hawaiian Ukuleles plus Lili'us and Taropatches, (though these are referred to as "hi-bred" on the website), and Tahitian Ukuleles including a slightly different design referred to as a Pineapple Tahitian Ukulele. These all come with branded tailpieces, and an inlaid palm tree at the base of the fretboard, (apart from the pineapple which has a pineapple) and are made overseas, (it doesn't say where but I suspect the Philippines from the look of them), with the design work and final set up being done in Hawaii. There is a wood choice of cedar, spruce or mahogany for all models.
