Throughout the world there are small Ukulele manufacturing firms, maybe a luthier who has expanded the operation and taken on some staff, maybe a number of craftsmen who have got together in some form of co-operative. However it started these manufacturers usually make very high quality instruments even if the Ukulele is not the firm's main output. Also there are some larger instrument making firms, again more famous for other instruments but have made a few Ukuleles over the years

Bluebird'56 Guitars

It was started in 2012 is based mainly in Rome, Italy, (but with some of the work being done in Bali, Indonesia) was started by Rob Bluebird, (a pseudonym?) and is now made up of at least 2 other luthiers. They make all kinds of Guitar including electric, acoustic, cigar box, lap steel and resonator; and often highly decorated. The other instrument that features in their catalogue is Ukuleles. I have seen acoustic and resonator Ukuleles in Soprano and Concert scale plus some 4 string cigar box instruments some of which are definitely Soprano and some may be Baritone? Taken from their facebook page "While Bluebird Guitars (Resonators & arch-top) production is quite limited to a couple of dozen per year, (sort of limited editions), the production of the ukulele can reach 50 pieces per month with the exception of a special top line of Rosewood. All the ukuleles are made out of a single piece of wood (body, sides and neck) that makes this item very peculiar. Most of the arch-top guitars are carved with flowers, birds and such (customers can ask for their own design) using also gem stones and 24 karat gold powder to give the piece a special flavour. Guitars & ukulele are 100% hand made" - I haven't seen that many though for 50 a month? It is also not clear what work is done in Italy and what is done in Indonesia but the production does seem to describe Cuk / Cak production and a lot of the wood decorations to my mind have an Indonesian look?

Soares'y Guitars

Based in Portugal, and the website doesn't seem to have been updated since the mid 2000's, though I have seen plenty of instruments newer than this, this is a family firm started by Mike Soares. They are most famous for their Tenor Guitars and how much actual manufacturing they do I am not sure because the bulk of their output is standard electric Guitars with the necks having been replaced by Tenor Guitar necks, (they do make the necks though)? I have seen a few instruments completely built by them and I have also seen in the catalogue what is clearly a Baritone Ukulele, (look at the string spacing on the neck), though they have given it steel strings and called in a Mini Tenor Guitar. I don't know if they make it themselves, have another of the local Portuguese firms make it or buy it in from China and upgrade it?
