Asian, (not china), 21st c. small Manufacturers click for more
China does dominate the region, (and the world for that matter), when it comes to Ukulele manufacture but there are an increasing number of workshops and factories opening up elsewhere in Asia, and still a few in business from the time before China became pre-eminent. Getting information on them can be hard as the websites are often difficult to translate
From Seoul, South Korea and founded in 2011 This is one of those Korean sites that don't translate so my information is even vaguer than usual. They say that the Ukuleles are handmade but there is at least 3 people involved with the firm, (one of whom is apparently called Oul and I have also seen that in the companies registration part of the website is is spelled Ohul Workshop?). For logos and the like they use a lot of Owls, though the name is spelt Oul (possibly a mistranslation on their part?) Back to the Ukuleles and they make mainly long neck Sopranos but also do Concert and Tenor scale instruments plus there is a custom shop which is mainly for inlay work but I have seen alternate body shapes and at least one Mini scale too.
Based in Hong Kong, (and apparently very proud of the cultural differences between HK and the Mainland), and founded in (or before) 2013 This is a distribution company (I can see no claims on any of the web presence I have seen that they make the Ukuleles just that they brand them however they do say their Ukuleles are "Handcrafted in Hong Kong" and they do offer some kind of Custom service so there must be something local) PSI apparently stands for Perfect Sound Indicator though there is no explanation of what that is suppose to mean I can see? On to the Ukuleles and as well as the premium series solid woods Concert and Tenor models, there is a special charity series sapele Soprano they do for charity organisations and sell at cost, (kudos to them!). There is also a standard series that comes in a variety of solid and laminate wood and as Soprano, Concert or Tenor; plus a Uke Bass, (some of these look very much like mainland products and it only says designed in Hong Kong on the sound hole label) Beyond this they also do a range of limited edition decorated Ukuleles they call the cult series; this range has included a Tenor Lili'u too, (these again say handcrafted in Hong Kong on the sound hole label). Some of their models feature PSI as the twelfth fret marker and have their trident logo and a fret marker on other frets too. Another unusual piece of decoration on some of the models is the addition of a small plastic pick guard under the sound hole but they are also very fond of the more usual bindings and laser etchings too
From Indonesia I believe it is the own brand name of one of the factories there. I have seen them on sale in Korea too (But I've never seen a decent photo!)
