North American 21st c. small importers/distributors click for more

There are a number of North American importers and retailers who have a range of Ukuleles they import, usually from China, and then brand with their own name. They are usually better than the budget end, (though may include a budget end model) and some can be quite good quality.

Liana

This is the house brand of New Jersey musical instrument distributor R.S.Berkely (founded 2002). The range appears to consist of a spruce top or an ovangkol Soprano and like all of Berkeley instrument they are aimed at the student market but are better quality that the true budget instruments.

Lulu

This is the brand name used for Ukuleles by the Norwalk, Connecticut distributors Vision Musical Instruments (VMI). The Range started with Soprano, Concert and Tenor, with sold wood tops and laminate sides in koa, mahogany or spruce. The 2013 catalogue no longer includes Sopranos and the custom models made in the US that they have been promising as "coming soon" are still to arrive.

Volz Music Products

This is the firm who distribute Diamond Head a common US budget brand of Soprano Ukuleles. They also own and distribute the slightly more up market Indonesian made Kanaloa brand Ukulele. They come in all scale from Soprano to Baritone and the website shows a prototype Bass too, (though I've not seen any production models?). The models are usually sapele with nato neck but they do a few Tenors with different woods and though it doesn't say I suspect they are all laminate. In 2015 they started distributing the Woodi type plastic Sopranos under the brand name Kics along with the usual finishes these also come with a translucent or transparent finish.
