21st c. Luthiers from Hawaii click for more
In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.
Now based in Kula, Maui, and most famous for his archtop Guitars he started out in 1972 in Seattle as a Mandolin maker who made some Soprano and Concert Ukuleles on the side. In 1989 He moved to Hawaii and was pretty much exclusively a Guitar maker. Some awards and design innovations later he has now reintroduced Ukuleles to his catalogue making Concert, Tenor and Baritone Scales, oddly though he doesn't make archtop Ukuleles?
T.D. (Toui) Ukuleles
From Pearl City, Oahu, he use to work for G-String before setting up on his own. His give name is Toui but I have no information beyond that and he may no longer still be making Ukuleles?
From Kea'au, Hawaii, TV Wood Craft consist of father and son luthier's, plus some students (because they teach Ukulele making as well). The father is Gerard Vincent and the son and main luthier is Thomas Vincent. They make predominantly Tenor Ukuleles and other wood craft items like jewellery boxes but not other musical instruments.
